Buddhism and Science: A Sense of Wonder
Buddhism and Science: A Sense of Wonder

Tuesday 26th March 2024
7:00pm - 9:15pm
Led by Vajrashura
Five Week Course
Both science and Buddhism being with questions: What is the universe? How did it come about? What is our place in it? What is our true nature?
When we stop and ask ourselves questions such as these, it can throw us out of our usual sleepwalking and into a deep querying about life, the universe, everything!
Science says the universe is vast and not easily comprehended. Buddhism says our minds that experience this universe is vast and cannot be fully understood by the rational mind.
Both science and Buddhism lead a sense of wonder and even awe at the majesty and beauty of life all around us and within us.
So if you have ever wondered about life and the universe, this course is for you.
Two Approaches to Truth
On this five-week course, we will be exploring the parallels and the differences in these two fascinating approaches in the quest for meaning and truth.
We’ll be exploring a variety of areas, from both traditions, including classical and modern physics, evolution, technology and its effects, clear thinking, materialism and eternalism, causality and conditionality.
The course is open to everyone. No experience of meditation is necessary. While an interest in Buddhism is assumed, you don’t have to be a Buddhist to do the course. And you don’t have to be a scientist either!
Course Overview
Over the five weeks we’ll look at:
- How both Buddhism and Science turn worlds upside down
- Relativity in Science and in Buddhism
- The Strangeness of the Universe – Quantum Physics and Buddhism
- Evolution – the Central Paradigm
- Technology and the Mind
Course Leader
This will all be led by Vajrashura, a member of the Triratna Buddhist Order. Vajrashura completed his undergraduate degree in Theoretical Physics and a masters in High Performance Computing before becoming interested in Buddhism, and is passionate about what both approaches can bring to our lives and to making the world a better place.
